Book Review: Funny Story by Emily Henry

Rating: ★★★★☆(4/5)

Introduction:

Released April 2024. Read January 2025.

This was my introduction into Emily Henry. Once I got over the cringy opening scenes I was all in. The idea of being forced to live with her complete opposite was not in Daphne’s 5 year plan.

Summary: A Brief Overview (Without Major Spoilers)

Picture the cutest Meet-Cute you can imagine. That was the life Daphne was living. She packed up her life to follow her fiance Peter into the sunset for their Happily Ever After. The two of them pick out a house (that Peter buys), she gets a dream job, and all’s right with the world. That is until everything comes crashing down when Peter confesses his love for his best friend Petra, and he breaks off the engagement.

Given one week to move out of her dream home the heartbroken Daphne finds herself in a strange predicament, becoming roommates with Petra’s ex, Miles. These two are polar opposites: Miles, the incurable optimist and Daphne, the realist, but they find common ground in the shared annoyance of the audacity of their exes.

After the two receive some not so exciting news in the mail, they decide to pair up to get back at their exes. It’s just for show. Right?

What Worked for Me:

The character chemistry. I was all about it. Miles and Daphne were so cute together. Daphne with her mom and Miles with his sister were very relatable. Daphne with her dad hit home harder than I want to admit. Emily has a knack for writing relatable characters and she loves her tropes. This one was full of them, Friends to Lovers, close proximity, fake dating, and my favorite the slow burn. The burn leads up to some spice but not the kind that would make me blush if I got caught reading it on the subway.

What Didn’t Work for Me: Trigger Warnings and Criticisms

The exes. Their audacity had all of my flabbers gasted. The way that Peter treats Daphne in the beginning of the book had me almost throwing my Kindle out the window. There is another scene later on in the book where Peter and Miles interact that left me wanting to pee in his Cheerios. Petra’s entitlement also had me shooketh. She acts like she thinks of herself as a girl’s girl but comes off as a pickme.

Final Thoughts:

My first RomCom of the year was a success. I loved Emily and am now making my way through People You Meet on Vacation. I hope that the character’s there are as loveable as Daphne and Miles.
